What is L–Carnitine?
It’s a naturally occurring amino acid that is vital in the metabolism of fat. It transports fatty acids into the mitochondria which are the metabolic furnace of a cell and the fatty acids are converted into energy there. The physiological importance of L–Carnitine was discovered in the 1960’s. It is made in the liver and kidneys and most of it resides in the body’s muscle tissue. In a well balanced diet, L–Carnitine is found in red meat, dairy products, avocados and tempeh. Diet can provide about 75% of the L–Carnitine that a body needs so that a supplement is recommended.
Fish Oil is oil that’s derived from the processing of fish. It is rich in long-chain Omega 3 fatty acids. At one time fish oil was contaminated by things that fish ingested but now it can be rendered into a very pure substance. Omega 3 fatty acids are needed for numerous normal bodily functions like controlled blood clotting and building cell membranes in the brain. The human body cannot make enough Omega 3 fatty acids so it’s essential that we take supplements that include fish oil.
